Former Quarry of Sámsonháza, Geological Interpretive Site
The former quarry located on the southern peak of Vár Hill, near the village of Sámsonháza, is one of the outstanding geotourism sites of the Novohrad–Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark.

The geological interpretive site offers a unique glimpse into the volcanic past of the Carpathian Basin during the Middle Miocene period (approximately 15–16 million years ago), making it an excellent destination for both casual visitors and professional geologists.
The rock wall of the former quarry clearly displays three characteristic layers resulting from ancient volcanic activity: at the base lies a coarse-grained volcanic breccia (tuff), above it a dark grey andesite lava flow, and finally a lighter-coloured, stratified tuffite layer capping the sequence. This tripartite stratification is well preserved and accessible for study, turning the site into a natural geological open-air classroom.
In addition to its scientific importance, the quarry also impresses visitors with its striking surface features. The steep walls, vivid layering, and clearly distinguishable rock types make it not only ideal for education but also for tourism and interpretation. The area is under nature protection, and informative panels maintained by the geopark help guide and educate visitors.
The site is easily accessible, just a short walk from the centre of Sámsonháza. As part of a designated nature trail, it can also be incorporated into a longer hike. The view from the quarry's edge is breathtaking—on clear days, one can see beyond the rolling hills of the Cserhát to the Karancs and the Medves Plateau, and even to the peaks of the Mátra Mountains.
The Sámsonháza quarry is a model geotourism destination, combining impressive geological heritage, scientific value, and an engaging visitor experience. It is a perfect example of how a former industrial site can be transformed into a sustainably managed interpretive location that appeals to both geology enthusiasts and nature-loving travellers.
