More information
The Holy Trinity Orthodox Church is located in the city centre of Miskolc, tucked away in a courtyard, with its tower visible from only a few spots. While modest on the outside, its interior houses Central Europe's largest iconostasis, which stands 16 metres tall and is adorned with nearly 90 icons. The iconostasis was crafted by Miklós Jankovics, a wood sculptor from Eger, while the icons were painted by Ukrainian artists and Anton Kuchelmeister, a Viennese artist who was also responsible for the ceiling frescoes. Inside the church, there is a unique relic: an icon said to have been gifted to the church by Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia. The church was built by Balkan merchants who, in gratitude for Miskolc's hospitality, placed a Hungarian coat of arms on the pulpit. Construction took place during the reign of Joseph II, which meant the church could not be built directly on the street front but had to be hidden within a courtyard. In keeping with Orthodox liturgical traditions, the building does not have an organ, as Orthodox ceremonies emphasise the human voice. The Orthodox Ecclesiastical Museum associated with the church features a rich collection of relics, including gold- and silver-embroidered liturgical vestments, crosses, chalices, and other ecclesiastical treasures. The church's ornate wrought-iron gates can still be opened with their original keys, and the interior acoustics add to the unique experience: there is a spot where the echo of one's voice can be heard with exceptional clarity.
