More information
In the past, the area of Miskolc now known as Szinva Terrace was called Little Venice. The name referred to the Szinva Stream, which used to flow through the city centre in a wide channel between two rows of houses, sometimes even overflowing its banks during the spring snowmelt or heavy summer rains. During the tragic flood of 1878, the stream inundated the city and caused significant destruction. After this disaster, the stream was regulated and later diverted underground. While this brought peace of mind, it also made the area less visually appealing: the old streambed behind the houses was converted into a car park in the 1950s.

The transformation began in 2005 when the city of Miskolc launched an ambitious rehabilitation project, reopening the Szinva Stream and turning the area into a modern urban space. This is how Szinva Terrace was born, quickly becoming one of the central hubs of city life. During the design process, great emphasis was placed on creating not only an aesthetically pleasing space but also a communal area where residents and visitors alike would enjoy spending time. Terraces, steps, and flowerbeds lead down to the stream, which features an artificial waterfall.
The attractions of the square include the famous Love Lock Bridge, where couples leave tokens of their affection, and László Kutas's bronze sculpture group "Miskolc Girls," depicting three young women as if caught in the middle of a friendly conversation. The buildings in the area mostly reflect the eclectic style of the late 19th century, but modern elements have also been introduced, such as the Lotto House built in the 1960s, which has since become a distinctive feature of the square.
Szinva Terrace is a favourite meeting place for locals and tourists alike, offering vibrant life with its restaurants, cafés, and outdoor events.
