Destinations on this route

The rolling hills of Zala, the unique microclimate of Lake Hévíz, and the volcanic and limestone landscapes of the Bakony–Balaton UNESCO Global Geopark not only provide a stunning backdrop for active recreation but also serve as the cradle of the region's distinctive flavours. The Hévíz Picnic Box cycling route network weaves this rich natural and cultural heritage into an experience-based, easily navigable tour offering.

Sustainable Experiences from the Saddle

The initiative, born from the collaboration between Hévíz Tourism Nonprofit Ltd. and the local experts of Szeretünk Zala, aims to go beyond traditional sightseeing by showcasing the charm of Zala County through personal encounters and genuine local values. Developed as part of the international CROSSDEST project, this initiative invites conscious travellers, food enthusiasts, and those seeking active recreation to explore the rural lifestyle.

The routes starting from the Hévíz Tourinform office connect the area's most exciting producers and attractions. Visitors can rent traditional and electric bikes at the Tourinform office and pick up a Picnic Box filled with regional delicacies to set off on their journey through the hills of Zala.

Flavours Shaped by Earth's History

The local producers featured on the tours not only process delicious and healthy ingredients but also keep the traditions of the cultural landscape alive. What ends up on your plate or in your picnic basket is closely tied to the rocks beneath your feet.

The soil of the region, part of the Bakony–Balaton UNESCO Global Geopark network, is the result of diverse geological processes spanning hundreds of millions of years. The limestone formed from tropical marine sediments, traces of extensive basalt volcanism, and the sediments of the ancient Pannonian Sea have all contributed to the unique soil that gives Zala wines, honeys, cheese specialities, and fruits their distinctive flavours. Through story-driven descriptions developed as part of the project, visitors can gain insights into how geology and nature have shaped the lives of local communities.
