More information

Deák Square is one of the key historical and cultural hubs in the city centre of Miskolc, where the past and present of the city converge. The square was established in the 1920s when the city aimed to commemorate the heroes of the First World War, and in 1925, the statue of Ferenc Deák was placed here. The statue depicts Deák, who was a pivotal figure in the Compromise of 1867 and played a significant role in Hungarian history. On the northern side of the square stands the Forestry Directorate building, which draws attention with its Neo-Renaissance style. Built in 1929, its purpose was to provide a home for the state forestry administration that fled from Upper Hungary after the Treaty of Trianon. On the other side of the square is the statue of József Lévay, a renowned poet from Miskolc, which was erected in 1934. The historical significance of the square is not limited to its statues. The Pece Stream once flowed here, but it was channelled underground in the 1960s. Although the stream is no longer visible, its memory lives on in the remaining bridge railings. Today, Deák Square is one of Miskolc's most important meeting points, where urban life, history, and culture coexist, offering pleasant walkways and green spaces for visitors.
