More information

Földes Ferenc Grammar School is one of the most renowned secondary schools in Miskolc, earning national recognition over its long history. The school's roots trace back to the 16th century, when a Reformed grammar school was established in the city in 1560. Later, in the 18th century, the Catholic Minorite order built a school in the city centre, where the grammar school stands today. The current building was constructed in 1910, based on the designs of Béla Orczy. Over the decades, the institution served various purposes: during the world wars, it functioned as a military hospital, and between 1949 and 1953, it temporarily housed students of the University of Miskolc. In 1953, the school adopted the name Földes Ferenc Grammar School and experienced its golden era in the following decades, ranking among the best secondary schools in the country. Students achieved outstanding results, particularly in the fields of natural sciences and mathematics, at both national and international competitions. The building and its surroundings, including the Minorite Church and Heroes' Square, are among the most beautiful sights in the northern city centre of Miskolc. The distinctive brick-clad building has become a symbol of the city, and it is common for multiple generations to choose this school as their alma mater. Today, Földes Grammar School remains an integral part of local identity and is often referred to as a "brand" by its alumni, the Földesists.
