More information
Fascination with the Middle Ages captivates people of all ages, whether through literary works, films, or modern video games. Knights' Tournament Square, located at the foot of Diósgyőr Castle, is a living memory of this era, hosting the spectacular Medieval Festival every year. Majestic parades and battles by horseback archers, falconers, and historical re-enactors bring the spirit of the Middle Ages to life. Built in 2015, the square became the first outdoor venue for historical re-enactment games in Central Europe. The arena is a 90×30 metre space surrounded by covered stands with seating for 750 people. The arena floor is covered with special sand, making it suitable for use in various weather conditions. In addition to the impressive knightly games, the programme is enriched with concerts, musical and dance performances, and craft markets. The main attraction of the Medieval Festival is the royal procession, where the medieval court appears in all its splendour before the audience. The venue is not only used for historical events but also hosts sporting competitions such as dressage and show jumping. Alongside the events, gastronomic festivals and wine tastings are also held in the market square. Beneath the area, remnants of a medieval water supply system have been uncovered, now serving as an exhibition space. The silver coins discovered here highlight the historical significance of the castle, dating back to the time of John Hunyadi.
