The monument is a memorial of the heroes of the First World War.

During the war, 215 Bodrogkeresztúr inhabitants fought as soldiers. Almost half of the 35 million crowns cost of the monument was donated by the wife of Count Ernő Széchenyi-Wolkenstein, and the rest was contributed by the people of the village to show their respect. The foundation of the monument is made of Bodrogkeresztúr stone, while the pillar is made of stone from Erdőbénye.
