Lovers' Bridge

One of Miskolc's unique attractions is Lovers' Bridge, which spans the Szinva Stream. It is not just a passageway but also a venue for lovers to make their vows. The stream, which sustained the city for centuries, has occasionally caused severe flooding, such as during the tragic events of 1878. Today, however, the Szinva's calm flow creates a romantic atmosphere in the heart of the city, on the Szinva Terrace, where the bridge is located. The creation of the bridge began in 2006 when Vilmos Fedor, then Deputy Mayor of Miskolc, sought a quickly implementable idea that would also appeal to residents. He was inspired by a newspaper article about lovers and Attila József's poem "Ode," and the romantic setting of the Szinva seemed a perfect spot for lovers. With the help of local artisans, the bridge was completed, and the first padlock was placed on it as a symbol of love for the city. Since then, hundreds of couples have affirmed their love here by attaching padlocks to the bridge's railing. Around the bridge on the Szinva Terrace, restaurants, cafés, and snack bars have opened, making the area one of the city's most popular meeting places. Nearby, László Kutas's statue "Girls of Miskolc" further enhances the special atmosphere of the location. The evening illumination of the Szinva Stream, the artificial waterfall, and the fish swimming in the stream all contribute to the romantic ambience, which is equally popular with locals and tourists. The bridge functions not only as a modern idea but also as a revival of old traditions, as Miskolc already boasted a "lovers' bridge" in front of the Dark Gate at the beginning of the 20th century. The current version of the bridge has become a symbol of unity for lovers, and the ritual of throwing keys into the water proclaims eternal fidelity.
