More information
Pope John Paul II Square is one of the most beautiful public spaces in Miskolc, situated between the Diósgyőr housing estate and the Roman Catholic Church of the 'Name of the Virgin Mary'. The formerly disorganised area, once used as a car park, was transformed into a landscaped terrace in the 2000s, which descends in steps to the Szinva Stream, creating an oasis in the heart of the city. At the top of the square, an illuminated fountain catches the eye, and walking paths lead along green areas adorned with flowerbeds, shrubs, and trees. Visitors resting on the benches can enjoy the view and the proximity of the stream. The larger grassy areas on the middle and lower levels, as well as the sections near the stream, bring visitors even closer to nature. The square was named after Pope John Paul II, whose friendly and approachable personality is reflected in the open and inviting design of the space. Across the stream, in the church garden, stands a statue of Saint John Paul II, erected to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth. The statue, with open arms, symbolically embraces the square, watching over its visitors. The Pope's famous words, 'Do not be afraid,' are particularly fitting in this peaceful, friendly park, where locals and visitors alike can relax and connect with nature, soothed by the gentle babbling of the Szinva Stream.
