"I sit on a glittering cliff" – writes Attila József in his famous Ode, inspired by the Palace Hotel in Lillafüred. This Neo-Renaissance hotel, standing by Lake Hámori, is an iconic retreat for generations. Opened in 1930, Palotaszálló quickly became a popular resort for the elite of the time, reminiscent of King Matthias’ hunting lodges with its stunning hanging gardens and medieval-style bastions. The hotel hosted conferences, diplomatic events, and even famous guests; parts of the 1934 Hungarian film Meseautó (Car of Dreams) were filmed here. After the war, the Palace Hotel operated as a union resort and has undergone extensive renovations since the 2010s, restoring its former glory. In 2015, it became part of the National Heritage Registry and remains a favored destination for couples and families seeking romance and relaxation. Its unique ambiance is enhanced by vintage furnishings, stained glass windows, and the special atmosphere of its tower rooms. Visitors to Lillafüred can enjoy many activities: romantic walks in the hanging gardens, boating on Lake Hámori, exploring the caves, or a nostalgic ride on the forest train. The hotel’s historical exhibition and a ride on the chairlift over the forest provide additional memorable experiences. Lillafüred enchants visitors year-round, offering relaxation in every season.

  • Plant-Based Plate Just one meat-free day can save up to 2,500 litres of water and several kilos of CO₂. You don't have to be vegan – one plant-based main course per meal is enough to get started.
  • Local Eatery The local food on your table travels less than global imports – and gives so much more back to the region. Choose dishes marked as 'local' and taste the flavour of the area.
  • Plate Conscious A third of the world's produced food ends up as waste – often from a buffet plate. Take less, taste it, and only go back if you truly need more. The Earth's resources will thank you.
  • Climate-Friendly Sleeper The fresh night breeze is free, air conditioning is not. If you use the air conditioning at around 24°C, or prefer to open the window during the evening hours, you significantly reduce your energy consumption – the planet's gratitude comes in the form of a badge.
  • Arriving on Rails A train journey emits 5-7 times less CO₂ per passenger compared to the same distance by car. Plus, there's so much more to see through the window than from the motorway.
  • Story Finder The soul of a place lies in the stories of its people, not in the loudspeakers of tourist buses. Book a locally guided tour and listen as a place comes to life.
  • Leave No Trace The best guest of nature is the one no one knows was ever there. Stay on the designated path, take all your rubbish home with you (and if you have the energy, take what others have left behind too), don’t pick plants, don’t feed the animals, and leave stones, shells, and twigs where you found them. This way, the landscape will remain just as beautiful for the next wanderer.
  • Inclusive host A service provider that employs a diverse team (including people with disabilities, those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and colleagues with various experiences) creates double value. You support this by choosing to spend with them.
  • Local shopper Money spent at the market, with artisans, or on local produce stays within the community and circulates in the region. Take home the producer's story, not just their goods.
  • Selective Expert Properly sorted waste can largely be given a new lease of life – paper becomes paper, glass becomes glass, metal becomes metal. Dispose of waste in the right place, and your few seconds of effort will benefit generations to come.
